Shinji Ohmaki is a contemporary artist who is internationally acclaimed for his large-scale installations.
The outstanding qualities of Ohmaki’s magnificent installations, designed to extract and convey a physical sensation of space and time, were first evident in art projects and theatre pieces that transformed a site through collaborations with a host of people. Ohmaki’s spaces, in which light and darkness play key roles, are imbued with an air of primeval life governed by celestial rhythms. Moreover, his ornamental images, inspired by plants, animals, and landscapes, evoke a realm of rich patterns that were part of ancient human life. Ohmaki’s practice, rooted in his long-running inquiry into the meaning of existence, provides us with fundamental insights into the laws of nature and the inescapable cycle of life and death.
This exhibition is being held in a huge columnless gallery, extending up to the National Art Center, Tokyo’s eight-meter-high ceilings, and across a 2,000-square-meter area. As with a theatre piece, the moment we step into the highly stimulating space, we become both viewers and performers in a world of Ohmaki’s creation. Based on past series, Ohmaki’s newest installations are executed on a scale previously unseen in his career, and the artist’s latest video works, begun at the height of the pandemic that shook the world, resonate with us on a profoundly physical level. Shinji Ohmaki makes composite art for the contemporary era.
